Report by Usman Ibrahim Babgana, Olorunsegun L. Adebusola and Fati Alhaji Kokari

The study set out to examine and assess peace building efforts in Bulabulin Ngarannam community in Borno State which special focus on the peacebuilding strategies, resilience and early warning mechanisms. Preliminary community familiarization visits made by the researchers set the foundation for the actual data collection/ engagement with community members. The engagement with community members was guided by the discussion guide on the subject matter. The discussions comprised of two groups of women and men. The separation of men and women is in accordance with the customs and culture of the people. The discussions from both groups revealed that there have been several strategies in place to sustain peace in the community. As it relates to early warning mechanism and peacebuilding strategies, the most important strategy is the monitoring and interrogation of strange faces and movements within the community. Women play a very important part in this aspect in that they observe and report strange movements when the men are at work or in the farm. Hadin Kai (putting heads together/cooperation) facilitated by traditional and religious leaders have been the major factor that helps community members resist external attacks. In conclusion, the sustainability of the relative peace in the community leaves much to be desired.
