Information about Belarus

The Republic of Belarus is situated in the center of Europe. There are the shortest transport communications here that connect the Commonwealth of Independent States with other West European countries. Belarus borders on Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and the Ukraine.

Belarus is the land of forests, lakes and swamps and it occupies the western part of the East European plain, including the river basins of the Dnieper, the Western Dvina and the Nieman.

There is a nature reserve in Belarus – the Belovezhskaya Pusha that used to be a place of hunting for Polish kings and Russian tsars.

 

Vitebsk is the cultural capital of Belarus.

Vitebsk has already celebrated its 1000-year anniversary and at present it is an administrative center of Vitebsk Region with the population of 369.5 thousand people.

Everyone who arrives in Vitebsk ought to visit the Town Hall. It was founded in 1597 when the city was granted the Magdeburg Right. The present-day building of the Town Hall dates back to the year of 1775 when it was a two-storey building. At the beginning of 1911 the third storey was added. Nowadays, the local history museum is organized there.

Guests of the city take a keen interest in visiting salt mines|warehouses, the building of the circuit court (now – the Art Museum), the first power plant (the building of the former Literature Museum), the Land-and-Peasant Bank(nowadays – Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine) and many other sights.

Several remarkable monuments of church architecture remained in Vitebsk, such as the Annunciation or Blagoveshenskaya Church (dated mid-XII century), the Annunciation (Market) or Voskresenskaya Church that can be regarded as an architectural model in late Vilensk baroque; the most magnificent  Assumption (Uspenskaya) Cathedral in Vitebsk; St. Barbara Catholic Church, St Mark Trinity Abbey and others.

Among modern architectural attractions one can mark out:

-       The concert ground of the Summer Amphitheater that seats about 6 thousand spectators. This is a site for the International Art Festival “Slavonic Bazzar in Vitebsk”;

-       The architectural complex of the biggest Victory Square with a memorial in honour of  soldier-liberators. It also includes a memorial area, fountain and the main monument called “Three Bayonets”;

-       Vitebsk Sports Ice Palace, founded in 1999, seats 2 thousand spectators.

-       Repin Ilia Efimovich – a Russian artist, master of portraits, historical and genre painting, an academician of Emperor Art Academy.

-       Pen Iudel Movshevich – a Russian and Belorussian artist, the leading man of “jewish renaissance ” in art in the XX century.

-       Chagal Mark Zakharovich – one of the most famous representatives of avant-garde in art at the beginning of the XX century.

-       Malechich Kazimir Severinovich – an artist in avant-garde, one of the founders of the suprematism.

-       Alfiorov Zhores Ivanovich – a physicist, Noble prize-winner in Physics in the year of 2000.

An excursion acquaints with a rich history, cultural and spiritual traditions of the city that grew up on the banks of the Western Dvina. During the tour you will see parts of the city over the River Dvina, inseparably  linking Vitebsk with its thousand-year history. You can visit not only those places that breathe memory centuries, but also those that  have recently entered  the landscape of the city, though they have been already liked by its inhabitants .

The city, founded by the Krivichs, grew quickly and flourished, and later Vitebsk City Hall became a symbol of independence and power of Vitebsk.

The city has always been associated with spiritual traditions; Dormition Cathedral, Resurrection Church, Annunciation Church, St. Alexander Nevsky’s Church, St. Basil's Cathedral affect significantly the spiritual life of the city.

Vitebsk is the ancient city, which multiplies the artistic tradition of world-level culture, developed in the early XX century. In the heart of the city there isYakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theatre, the puppet theatre “Lialka”, the Museum of Art, where you can find the collections of famous artists: Repin, Levitan, A. Kuindji,  I.Khrutsky , Y. Pen. The life of the city is connected with Marc Chagall’s life and creative activity.Chagall Art Center,Marc Chagall Museum, the Monument to Marc Chagall tell about theworld-renowned artist.

Modern Vitebsk is also famous far beyond Belarus due to the The International Festival of Arts "Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk", which is held at the amphitheater.

A former peasant land-bank which is now Academy of Veterinary Medicine, Vitebsk Regional Philarmonic with the organ concert hall, the Governor's Palace, where Napoleon stayed in 1812, also attract tourists.

In Vitebsk you can see a monument to A. Pushkin, a renewed railway station, Kirov Bridge, Victory Square and the Memorial Avenue of Military Glory .

Famous Russian artist Ilya Repin (1844-1930) acquired the estate on the picturesque banks of the Western Dvina near Vitebsk in May 1892 for the money received from the sale of the paintingReply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks”. I.E. Repin came here for ten summers. Today it is a branch of the Vitebsk Regional Museum.
