Philosophy and the Plurality of Languages
In many areas of philosophy today, English appears to have become the dominant language. This obscures the fact that philosophy continues to be practiced in a variety of languages around the world. This lecture argues for considering the diversity of languages as fundamental to the practice of philosophy. The topic will be examined from linguistic, philosophical, and political perspectives.
Philosophie und die Pluralität der Sprachen
In vielen Teilen der Philosophie scheint sich heute Englisch als die einzig dominante Sprache durchgesetzt zu haben. Dies täuscht darüber hinweg, dass weltweit weiterhin in verschiedenen Sprachen philosophiert wird. Der Vortrag plädiert dafür, für die Praxis des Philosophierens die Vielfalt der Sprachen als grundlegend zu betrachten. Das Thema wird aus linguistischer, philosophischer und politischer Perspektive beleuchtet.
Rolf Elberfeld is professor of philosophy at the University of Hildesheim and one of the directors of the DFG-funded Center for Advanced Studies “Philosophizing in a Globalized World – Historical and Systematic Perspectives” (GloPhi). His research focuses on philosophy of culture, phenomenology, intercultural aesthetics, philosophy of the body and Chinese and Japanese philosophy. His publications include Dekoloniales Philosophieren: Versuch über philosophische Verantwortung und Kritik im Horizont der europäischen Expansion (Hildesheim: Olms, 2021), Philosophieren in einer globalisierten Welt: Wege zu einer transformativen Phänomenologie (Freiburg: Alber, 2017), and Sprache und Sprachen: Eine philosophische Grundorientierung (Freiburg: Alber, 2012).
