Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is central to our mission of redefining philosophy as a discipline in a globalized world. We believe that philosophical inquiry must reflect the rich diversity of human thought, experience, and cultural traditions, and we actively work to dismantle the structural barriers that have historically excluded many voices from philosophical discourse. By fostering an inclusive and equitable environment, we aim to cultivate a vibrant intellectual community where all perspectives are valued and engaged.

1. Challenging Eurocentrism

We are committed to addressing the historical dominance of Eurocentric perspectives in philosophy. Through our research, teaching, and collaborations, we actively seek to expand the philosophical canon to include traditions and thinkers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Indigenous cultures. By doing so, we challenge the traditional boundaries of the discipline and promote a more inclusive and pluralistic understanding of philosophy.

2. Amplifying Marginalized Voices

Our center prioritizes the inclusion of voices that have been historically marginalized, including women philosophers, Indigenous thinkers, and scholars from the Global South. We actively promote research and teaching that not only highlights their contributions but also explores the systemic factors responsible for their exclusion. Integrating non-canonical texts, oral traditions, and diverse cultural practices is a fundamental aspect of our work.

3. Intersectional Approach

Recognizing the complex interplay of factors such as race, gender, class, and culture, we adopt an intersectional approach to diversity and inclusion. This perspective informs our research priorities, teaching practices, and fellowship programs, ensuring that we address the multiple dimensions of marginalization and privilege that shape the field of philosophy.

4. Supporting Underrepresented Scholars

A cornerstone of our commitment to inclusion is our focus on supporting scholars from underrepresented backgrounds. Through our fellowship program, mentorship initiatives, and collaborative projects, we provide opportunities for early-career researchers—particularly those from the Global South and other marginalized regions—to engage with global philosophical networks and advance their academic careers.

5. Gender Equity in Philosophy

We are deeply committed to promoting gender equity in philosophy. This includes addressing the underrepresentation of women in the field, both as contributors to the philosophical canon and as active participants in academic research and teaching. Our initiatives include workshops and projects focused on women philosophers, as well as targeted support for female scholars through fellowships and leadership opportunities.

6. Inclusive Research Practices

Our research practices are designed to prioritize inclusivity and collaboration. We actively seek to engage scholars from diverse cultural, linguistic, and intellectual backgrounds to ensure that our projects reflect a wide range of perspectives. Creating spaces for truly cross-cultural dialogue requires using multilingual resources and working with scholars fluent in non-European languages.

7. Creating Accessible Resources

To promote greater access to philosophical knowledge, we develop open-access resources that make diverse philosophical traditions available to scholars, educators, and students worldwide. This includes creating multilingual digital archives, bibliographies, and educational materials that highlight non-canonical and marginalized perspectives.

8. Engaging with Decolonial and Postcolonial Thought

Our work is informed by decolonial and postcolonial theories which challenge the historical power dynamics embedded in the production and dissemination of knowledge. We explore how these frameworks can be used to critically examine the structures of philosophical discourse and to develop more equitable and inclusive approaches to the study and practice of philosophy.

9. Equitable Organizational Practices

Within our center, we strive to create an equitable and inclusive environment for all members, including researchers, fellows, and students. We implement fair hiring practices, provide opportunities for professional development, and foster a culture of respect and mutual support.

By integrating diversity and inclusion into every aspect of our work, GloPhi aims to transform philosophy into a discipline that truly reflects the complexity and richness of human thought. Beyond reshaping the boundaries of philosophical inquiry, our efforts contribute to the development of a more just and equitable global intellectual community.
