Domingos da Cruz Joins GloPhi to Explore Liberation Philosophy and Human Rights in Africa

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Domingos da Cruz as a Short-Term Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies “Philosophizing in a Globalized World.” He joins GloPhi from June to July 2026.
Domingos da Cruz is an Angolan philosopher, human-rights scholar, and civil-society activist whose interdisciplinary work connects contemporary political philosophy with questions of liberation, nonviolent resistance, mental health, and the public sphere in Africa. He is currently a lecturer in Human Rights at Saint Thomas University in Canada.
He holds a PhD in Contemporary Philosophy, awarded summa cum laude by the University of Zaragoza, a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law from the Federal University of Paraíba, and a degree in Philosophy and Educational Studies from CEDBES in Angola. From 2021 to 2023, he was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture at Concordia University in Montreal.
His research examines the Philosophy of Liberation in Africa, contemporary political philosophy, human rights, nonviolent resistance, mental health as a biothanatopolitical issue, and the conditions of the African public sphere.
Through numerous books and articles, he has addressed such subjects as press freedom, political culture, authoritarianism, racism, democratic transformation, and human rights in Angola.
Beyond his academic work, Domingos da Cruz founded the NGO Observatório da Imprensa de Angola, which promotes democratic values and freedom of the press. His public engagement has received international recognition, including Angola’s National Human Rights Award in 2010 and Scholar at Risk Awards in 2020 and 2022.
During his fellowship, he contributes his perspectives on African liberation philosophy, Portuguese-language philosophical traditions, political resistance, and human rights to the interdisciplinary conversations at GloPhi.
