The Islamic Archive and Intellectual History in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

For most of the twentieth century, the debate about the production of knowledge in Africa centered on the colonial library and writings in European languages. There was little acknowledgment that a whole world of debate has been going on vigorously and extensively in other languages in Africa. This lecture will bring the Islamic library into the debate about the production of knowledge in postcolonial Africa. It will argue that a substantial number of intellectuals have made significant intellectual contributions in Arabic and Ajami (African languages written in Arabic script). The formation of this library spans a period of 800 years. It consists of historical writings, devotional writings, pedagogical writings, polemical writings, and political writings that must be taken into account in reconstructing African intellectual history.

المكتبة الإسلامية والتاريخ الفكري في أفريقيا جنوب الصحراء الكبرى

طوال الجزء الأكبر من القرن العشرين، تركز النقاش حول إنتاج المعرفة في أفريقيا حول المكتبة الاستعمارية والكتابات باللغات الأوروبية. ولم يكن هناك اعتراف يذكر بأن عالماً كاملاً من النقاش كان يدور بقوة وعلى نطاق واسع في لغات أخرى في أفريقيا. ستدخل هذه المحاضرة المكتبة الإسلامية في النقاش حول إنتاج المعرفة في أفريقيا ما بعد الاستعمار. وسوف يزعم أن عدداً كبيراً من المثقفين قدموا مساهمات فكرية كبيرة باللغة العربية والعجمية (اللغات الأفريقية المكتوبة بالخط العربي). تمتد فترة تأسيس هذه المكتبة إلى 800 عام. وهو يتألف من كتابات تاريخية، وكتابات دينية، وكتابات تربوية، وكتابات جدلية، وكتابات سياسية، والتي يجب أخذها في الاعتبار عند إعادة بناء التاريخ الفكري الأفريقي.

La bibliothèque islamique et l’histoire intellectuelle en Afrique subsaharienne (Résumé)

Pendant la majeure partie du XXe siècle, le débat sur la production du savoir en Afrique s’est concentré sur la bibliothèque coloniale et les écrits en langues européennes. On ignorait alors qu’un débat intense et approfondi se déroulait dans d’autres langues africaines. Cette conférence intègre la bibliothèque islamique au débat sur la production du savoir en Afrique postcoloniale. Elle démontrera qu’un nombre important d’intellectuels ont apporté des contributions intellectuelles significatives en arabe et en ajami (langues africaines écrites en écriture arabe). La constitution de cette bibliothèque s’étend sur une période de 800 ans. Elle est composée d’écrits historiques, religieux, pédagogiques, polémiques et politiques qui doivent être pris en compte dans la reconstruction de l’histoire intellectuelle africaine.

Short Bio

Ousmane Kane earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, France in 1993. He is currently the Emeritus Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Professor of Contemporary Islamic Religion and Society at Harvard Divinity School, and professor of African and African American Studies at the faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University. Before his time at Harvard, he served as an associate Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University .He has received many awards and fellowships, including the Leverhulme Trust fellowship at the University of London, the Institute for Advanced Studies Berlin fellowship, the Everett Mendelsohn Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the Harvard Graduate Student Council, and the Distinguished Africanist Award from the African Studies Association of North America.
