Lecture Series: What is Philosophy? A Critical Polylogue with Philosophers from Africa

What is philosophy? We have been asking ourselves this question since October, on a journey that is, for now, coming to an end: a journey through different philosophical landscapes, shaped by various regional and academic contexts, languages, and research interests. Where has our journey taken us? In this final lecture of our series, Rolf Elberfeld and Anke Graness will summarize the different points of view presented and look for common ground. They will also present their own views on philosophy and give an outlook on the research tasks ahead.

Anke Graness is professor of philosophy at the University of Hildesheim and one of the directors of the DFG-funded Center for Advanced Studies “Philosophizing in a Globalized World – Historical and Systematic Perspectives” (GloPhi). Her research interests include history of philosophy, philosophy in Africa, intercultural philosophy, global justice and feminist theory. Her publications include African Philosophy in an Intercultural Perspective (Stuttgart: J.B. Metzler 2022, edited with Edwin E. Etieyibo and Franz Gmainer-Pranzl), and Philosophie in Afrika. Herausforderungen einer globalen Philosophiegeschichte (Berlin: Suhrkamp 2023).

Rolf Elberfeld is professor of philosophy at the University of Hildesheim and one of the directors of the DFG-funded Center for Advanced Studies “Philosophizing in a Globalized World – Historical and Systematic Perspectives” (GloPhi). His research focuses on philosophy of culture, phenomenology, intercultural aesthetics, philosophy of the body and Chinese and Japanese philosophy. His publications include Dekoloniales Philosophieren: Versuch über philosophische Verantwortung und Kritik im Horizont der europäischen Expansion (Hildesheim: Olms, 2021) and Philosophieren in einer globalisierten Welt: Wege zu einer transformativen Phänomenologie (Freiburg: Alber, 2017).
