Wir freuen uns, dass drei Beiträge mit ISUM-Beteiligung auf der diesjährigen International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST) 2022 angenommen wurden. Die DESRIST zählt zu den wichtigsten Konferenzen für Design Science Research.

Möller, F., Chandra Kruse, L., Schoormann, T., & Otto. B. (2022): Design Principles for Boundary Spanning in Transdisciplinary Design Science Research. In Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA.

Abstract. Design principles capture prescriptive design knowledge to guide design science researchers and design professionals in their design works. In the context of a transdisciplinary team, design principles can also be a powerful vehicle to bridge knowledge barriers and facilitate collaboration among team members with different backgrounds and expertise. These heterogeneous actors use design principles as a boundary object which helps to mediate their diverse perspectives. The paper draws from boundary object theory to explore the goals and the mechanisms of boundary spanning through ‘design principles-in-use’ and ‘design principles-in-formulation’. We discuss the applicability of our findings using a case of formulation and application of design principles for data spaces in a transdisciplinary research consortium. Our results add the layers of transdisciplinary collaboration to the ongoing discourse on design principles and design knowledge accumulation and evolution.

The development of design principles is an important ingredient in design science research. Design principles capture and formalize lessons learned from a situational design endeavour to guide both academics and practitioners alike in building similar artefacts. Although the development procedure is highly iterative and creative, it requires a certain degree of systematics, in order to ensure rigor. Against this backdrop, this short paper reports on our ongoing project in which we interview DSR paper authors and ask them to reflect on their actual design path to extract general activities and abstract strategies. In doing this, we (1) complement prior conceptual work with empirical insights and (2) present an initial set of four strategies for the development of design principles, structured along with the deductive and inductive modes of theorizing.

Hofer, J., Walter, D., & Knackstedt, R. (2022): Designing a Tool to conduct Real-Time Delphi Studies in Research Projects. In (Online-)Proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology (DESRIST), Prototype Paper, St. Petersburg, Florida, USA.

This paper shows the design of a prototype for conducting Real-Time-Delphi studies at time-critical events in research projects or workshops where experts are only available once. Real-Time-Delphi studies are used to get a consensus from experts about future developments of a specific topic. Application of the prototype in these contexts mitigates issues from classical Delphi Studies,as it allows them to be carried out in significantly shorter periods of time. The development of the tool went through several iterations with first applications and evaluations from a researcher’s and a lecturer’s perspective.
