Research on (some of) the Bantu-languages

(Diese Seite ist nicht auf Deutsch verfügbar)

Current Work

Our "Ontology-team" consists of Prof. Sonja Bosch, University of South Africa (UNISA), Prof. Elsabé Taljard, University of Pretoria and me. We're working towards an electronic ontology of linguistic units (parts of speech / morpheme inventory) of Northern Sotho and Zulu, currently extending it with the help of other language experts to more languages (Tswana, Swahili etc.). This ontology will represent a hierarchical and relational model of morph(eme) classes. An up-to-date article on the current state of the project can be found in the Nordic Journal of African Languages, Issue 24:2/2015.

Another field of research is that of Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (ICALL). Our research concerns (automated) feedback strategies and how to implement them in dynamic web pages with an electronic lexicon as a basis and grammar modules added. This research also leads towards a machine translation application on the level of chunks from English to African Languages, like, e.g., Zulu.

Students' participations (information science, information technology lexicography, computational linguistics) are very much welcome! Please contact one of the above, if you're interested.
