Project Teams
We formed several teams
OCR4all
Felix Vossel (a BA Student of International Information Management at the University of Hildesheim) applied the OCR software OCR4all originally developed to do character recognition of middle-age handwriting together with Gertrud Faaß. They found it easy to use and to train on our data and the results were stunningly good. His work was sponsored by the German Society for Computational linguistics and Language technology (GSCL)).
German-English
Profs. em. Sonja Bosch and Inge Kosch (University of South Africa), Elsabé Taljard and Dr. Margaret Marggraff (both University of Pretoria Marggraf beeing a team member from 2023 to 2024) and Gertrud Faaß (University of Hildesheim) utilize the OCR4all-output and transfer it into pre-database Excel tables, also adding missing information (e.g. noun class numbers) and, most of all, English translations for whatever was written by Endemann in German. These include additional grammar information, examples, fixed expressions and idioms.
English-Sotho
Prof. Mampaka Lydia Mojapelo (University of South Africa) is – so far - the sole member of the English-Northern Sotho team, adding information concerning modern orthography and meaning of words. The same task is fulfilled for Sesotho by Mmasibidi Setaka (SADiLaR), Joseph Sibeko (University of Cape Town) and Dr. Elias Malete (University of the Free State). For Setswana, we are urgently looking for experts!
English-Afrikaans
Profs. em. Danie Prinsloo and Elsabé Taljard (University of Pretoria) are mainly responsible for translating the English text into Afrikaans.
Database development and implementation
Concerning the development and implementation of the database, Gertrud Faaß and Marissa Griesel are responsible, SADiLaR will assist with putting the final product on the web.
Miscellaneous
Every project team needs someone to work on the miscellaneous issues, here, a lot of coordinating work is performed by Marissa Griesel (SADiLaR).
