Beginning of the winter semester 2020/21

When and in which form will the winter semester 2020/21 begin?

The winter semester 2020/21 begins on 19.10.2020 with the introduction week. The lecture period starts from 26.10.2020.

Due to the already existing health risk caused by the Corona pandemic, the University of Hildesheim is again preparing for the conduction of an online semester for the coming winter semester. The Ministry of Science of Lower Saxony announced the following in writing on 23 June 2020: “Because of the dynamic spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, a reliable estimation of the infection cases in the coming autumn and of the necessary protection measures against the infection is not possible at this point.”

However, the University of Hildesheim as a brick and mortar university strives to return to classroom teaching as soon as possible. For a responsible crisis management there will be held continuous inspections of possible attendance formats based on the existing hygiene protection plan. Thus, the term hybrid semester is used throughout Germany. A presence on the university campus will be made possible step by step. However, nobody knows at this point whether and to what extend this will be possible in the winter semester. The combination of online and classroom-based courses will not be excluded as an option. However, no responsible decision can be made at the present time.

Attendance examinations are already taking place in present times under the strict guidelines of the hygiene protection plan.

Will an introduction week take place?

Yes. The introduction week will take place from 19.10 to 22.10.2020. The University of Hildesheim is currently working on a programme that includes both online sessions and attendance events. The complete programme will be announced in September.

Examination matters

I have a question about a specific exam. Who can I contact?

Please check first the website of the University. Should your question is still not answered, please contact the respective examiners.

Who decides if an exam is postponed?

The examiners make this decision.

I’m not sure if anything changes regarding the organisation of my exams. Who can I contact?

Please contact the examination office responsible for you.

Please note that there’re currently no personal consulting hours. Instead of that, you can contact the staff of examination office by telephone or e-mail.

I have an important question about the current changes in the examination system, which do not only affect me but also my degree course. Who is my contact person?

If you have important questions regarding your examination matters, which affect not only you but also many other students, e.g. the consequences of postponing exams, you will find a lot of information in this FAQ list.

If you still need general information, Mr Markus Flohr (Head of the Matriculation and Examination Office) and Mrs Dr. Angelika Obstoj (Head of Department 3 for Study Matters) will be happy to help you.

Will exams, which were arranged to take place before 01.04 und now are postponed to a date during the summer semester, be assigned to the winter semester?

Postponed exams, which would take place between 01.04 and 31.05.2020, will be assigned to the winter semester.

Diploma: due to coronavirus, I could no longer acquire my degree until 31.03.2020, as my last exam had to be postponed and I will only be able to acquire it within the summer semester 2020. On which date will my diploma be issued?

The diploma date is always the date of the last test performance (or academic achievement, should you acquire one after the last test performance).

Thus, the date, on which you actually completed test performance, appears on your diploma. The date of issue is also shown. This also applies for the other degree documents.
Furthermore, the Examination Office will issue a certificate for those who acquired their degree due to coronavirus in the next examination period, i.e. between 01.04 and 31.05.2020, stating that the degree is to be assigned to the winter semester 2019/20 because of the extended examination period and the reasons behind that.

Are exams or academic achievements, which require university attendance, allowed or are they completely prohibited until the beginning of the semester?

Exams and academic achievements, which require university attendance, are prohibited until 18.04.2020. The exams will either be postponed until the end of the protective measures or they can be performed in an alternative form, e.g. with support of IT. The examiners decide whether one or the other is the case.

Exams with attendance

Will exams in attendance take place in the upcoming winter semester 20/21?

Here you can find the schedule for exams in attendance for the summer semester 2020 that will take place until october, 16th.:

Are there special regulations regarding the validity of the semester ticket?

According to SVHI and RVHI (bus transport) and NITAG (rail transport) the following exceptions apply:

Bus: The old WiSe 2019/20 tickets will still be accepted. However, the validity for the summer semester 2020 has to be proven by an additional certificate of enrolment for the SoSe 2020. This regulation applies until further notice.

Railway: The valid certificate of enrolment for the summer semester 2020 together with a valid official ID photo are accepted as travel authorisation. The latter corresponds to the semester ticket. This regulation applies in the period from 01.04.2020 to initially 31.07.2020.

Transition from Bachelor to Master studies

I’m enrolled in the Master’s course and would have to submit a successful completion of my Bachelor’s degree by the end of the winter semester as proof. Due to coronavirus I can’t do that. I also assumed that I would have completed my Bachelor’s degree by the end of the winter semester, thus I didn’t apply for the Master’s degree again. Can I continue studying my Master’s studies?

Regarding corona-related delays of the completion of Bachelor’s degree, please contact the person responsible for you at the Matriculation Office by e-mail, describing the concrete circumstances. On 17.03.2020 the Presidential Board of the University decided that in such cases the deadline for providing proof for the Bachelor's degree will be extended until the end of the summer semester 2020 (i.e. until 30.09.2020). This means that you can continue your Master's studies without interruption, provided you re-register.

I have been admitted to the Master's course with conditions, but due to the corona crisis I cannot prove that I have fulfilled my duties by the deadline of 31.03.2020. Will I be de-registered?

No. Students who have been admitted with conditions and would have to prove the fulfilment of these conditions by the end of the winter semester 2019/20, but cannot do that because of the corona crisis, will also be granted an extension until the end of the summer semester 2020 (i.e. until 30.09.2020). Please contact the person responsible for you at the Matriculation Office by e-mail, describing the concrete circumstances.

I am studying English in the polyvalent Two-Subject Bachelor's course and intend to apply for the Teaching Master's degree in WiSe 20/21. Unfortunately, I assume that I will not be able to provide proof of an at least three montly stay abroad required for the application in due time. Can I still apply?

Yes, applicants with  English as their subject who wish to apply for a Master's degree in Teaching at primary or secondary schools in winter semester 2020/2021 can submit proof of their stay abroad later; at the latest when registering for the Master's thesis.

I need my preliminary Transcript of Records. How do I get the signature of the Examination Office?

To enable you to directly download and print out certificates such as the preliminary Transcript of Records and, thus, save you time from visiting the Examination Office, such documents will no longer be signed in the Examination Office but will be marked with the note that they were created electronically and therefore without a signature. This regulation, which should have been introduced anyway as part of the process optimization, has now been brought forward.

How can I aquire my certificate and other graduation documents?

The examination office will send you back your graduation documents by post. This may currently take longer than usual, as the collection of signatures could be delayed due to the Corona crisis.

Attention: Please remember to always add your current postal address in the PWA.
