Quality awards

Since the 2009 academic year, the University of Hildesheim has been presenting three internal awards for outstanding teaching, outstanding research and outstanding service. The awards are a token of our gratitude for the outstanding achievements of our employees and the awarding of the prices has become an integral part of the university's annual New Year reception. The price money is endowed with € 3000.

Zum Neujahrsempfang 2010 hat die Hochschulleitung der Universität Hildesheim erstmalig Preise für hervorragende Forschung, Lehre und Service vergeben.

Universitätspräsident Professor Wolfgang-Uwe Friedrich hatte im Namen des Präsidiums im vergangenen Jahr (2009) dreimal 3000 Euro ausgelobt, um „symbolisch Dank zu sagen für besondere Leistungen innerhalb der Universität“. „Wir wollen damit zum Ausdruck bringen, dass wir Ihre Arbeit wertschätzen“, so Friedrich anlässlich seiner Rede beim Neujahrsempfang für Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim.


Der Präsident bedankte sich für die sehr gute Zusammenarbeit im vergangenen Jahr bei allen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern und brachte die Aufgaben für die Zukunft auf den Punkt: „Die Korrekturen der Bologna-Reform durchzuführen, ist eine große Aufgabe, daneben gilt es, den Akkreditierungsprozess zügig voranzubringen“.
Auch Vizepräsident Christoph Strutz dankte den Beschäftigten der Universität für ihre produktive Mitarbeit und zeichnete die Mitarbeiterinnen des Akademischen Auslandsamtes unter der Leitung von Elke Sasse-Fleige mit dem Preis für hervorragende Service-Leistungen aus.
Professor Dr. Stephan Porombka, Vizepräsident für Forschung, vergab daran anschließend erstmalig den Forschungspreis der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim und betonte, dass die Universität in ihren Forschungen eine profilierte Exzellenz herstelle. Porombka wörtlich: „Wenn wir heute zum ersten Mal den Forschungspreis der Stiftung Universität Hildesheim vergeben, dann hat das ganz sicher mit einem Selbstbewusstsein zu tun, das in den letzten Jahren gewachsen ist – und das man probehalber dann auch noch mal an den gewachsenen Erfolgen in der Drittmitteleinwerbung ablesen kann.“ Folgerichtig wurde Professor Dr. Wolfgang Schöer mit seinem Team aus dem Institut für Sozial- und Organisationspädagogik mit dem ersten Forschungspreis der Universität ausgezeichnet, der sich seit nunmehr fast sechs Jahren um die Forschungskultur der Universität Hildesheim in vielen Projekten verdient gemacht hat, unter anderem durch die Einwerbung eines DFG-Graduiertenkollegs.
Der Vizepräsident für Lehre, Professor Dr. Toni Tholen konnte abschließend den Preis für hervorragende Lehre an drei KollegInnen vergeben. Tholen betonte, dass – neben vielen verbesserungswürdigen Aspekten – der Bologna-Prozess erreicht habe, dass die Qualität der Lehre mittlerweile besondere Beachtung fände, und so sei es nur konsequent, hervorragende Lehrende auszuzeichnen. Für diesen Preis konnten Vorschläge von Studierenden der Universität sowie Studiendekanen der Fachbereiche eingereicht werden, eine Jury – bestehend aus zwei Studierenden und zwei Studiendekanen – entschied abschließend über die PreisträgerInnen anhand von festgelegten Vergabekriterien. Ausgezeichnet wurden: Dr. Kim Philipp Schumacher vom Institut für Geographie und Dr. Torsten Richter vom Institut für Biologie und Chemie für ihre Lehrveranstaltung zum Thema „Sustainable University“, sowie Janet-Marie McLaughlin vom Institut für englische Sprache und Literatur für ihre Lehrveranstaltung zum Thema „Textual Composition“.
Zum Abschluss des Neujahrempfangs konnte Universitätspräsident Friedrich die gute Nachricht über eine weitere – mittlerweile die siebente – Stiftungsprofessur für die Universität verkünden, die in diesem Jahr dank Unterstützung durch die VHG-Stiftung und die Sparkasse Hildesheim im Bereich der Kunstvermittlung besetzt werde.

Background and objectives

In addition to other elements of the Quality Management in the field of study and teaching at the University of Hildesheim, the Award for Outstanding Teaching is aimed at improving the quality of teaching. The teaching award is intended to acknowledge the special commitment of teachers to good teaching and to encourage teachers in the further development of innovative teaching and learning concepts.

The award also makes an important contribution to the realisation of the mission statement of the University of Hildesheim as a student university. The Award for Outstanding Teaching not only places the students' interests in the spotlight, but also gives students a central role in the nomination and selection of the award-winners.

The objectives aim to:

  • promote awareness of the importance of teaching
  • to create motivation for a good teaching process
  • highlight positive examples of good teaching
  • to encourage students to use their nomination to advance teaching at the university and make their own evaluation of certain teachers known

Selection criteria

When selecting the award-winners, the nominations submitted will be used to assess to what extent innovative teaching and learning concepts are used in the proposed course.

  • encouraging creative and critical thinking
  • encouraging independent learning and self-responsible action
  • encouraging team-oriented work and learning
  • encouraging problem-oriented learning
  • encouraging research-based learning
  • encouraging the theory-practice reference of teaching and learning processes
  • encouraging inter- and transdisciplinary learning
  • innovative use of media, information and communication technologies
  • use of innovative examination methods

Award procedure

All students of the University of Hildesheim are allowed to nominate their candidates from the second semester onwards. They will receive an e-mail with a link to the online portal. There they can nominate a teacher by filling out a short questionnaire.

The quality management then compiles a summary.

The zentrale Qualitätsmanagementkommission (Central Quality Commission) elects a jury. This jury is made up of equal numbers of students and teachers, chaired by the Vice-President for Teaching.

The award will be presented at the University's New Year event.
