Intercultural Workshops

We offer intercultural training for students, doctoral candidates, and staff at the University of Hildesheim. Your contact person for questions regarding the intercultural workshops or the CICC is Dr. Anne Julia Fett.

Our Workshops

Welcome on Board (EN)

Language: English

Welcome on Board is aimed at international exchange and full-time students. 

We will explore, discuss, and analyze various intercultural topics. For example:

  • Culture and intercultural communication
  • Cultural differences between universities
  • Adapting to cultural differences
  • Change of perspective
  • Personal experiences

Credits: 2–3 ECTS depending on the department in the General Studies / Fundamental Studies program / 2 ECTS in the study abroad module for Erasmus students upon participation and submission of the reflection assignments.

Intercultural Short Series (EN)

Language: German/English (see schedule)

The IO’s Intercultural Short Series is a series of short workshops covering a variety of intercultural topics. It is open to students, doctoral candidates, and staff.
The four parts of the Intercultural Short Series will take place online via BBB from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Credits: The workshops can be credited with 0.5 ECTS per session attended. This means you can also accumulate ECTS credits across semesters. Since only whole ECTS credits are awarded, you must attend at least two workshops to receive credit. A prerequisite for credit is the submission of a reflection paper for each workshop.

The workshops are led by our intercultural trainer, Lina Chihabi.

  • From Conflict to Dialogue: Navigating Cultural Tension at Work and in Private Life, October 1st, 2026; LSF course number: 0116
  • Orientalism Revisited: Islam and the Arab World in Modern Media, November 5th, 2026; LSF course number: 0117
  • Stories That Connect: Storytelling, Persuasion and Cultural Communication, December 3rd, 2026; LSF course number: 0118
  • The Culture Shock Journey: From Disorientation to Adaptation and resilience, January 7th,2027; LSF course number: 0119

Going Abroad (GER)

Language: German

This workshop is designed for students planning to study abroad. Both before and during your time abroad, you’ll have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the go for IQ team and other students studying abroad during several meetings, receive helpful tips, and turn your challenges into valuable experiences.

International Society (EN)

Language: English

Do you work with people from other cultural backgrounds (whether students, refugees, people with a migrant background, international clients, or colleagues) or do you have an international background yourself and have been living in Germany for at least a year?

Then join the International Society workshop!

Key learning content and objectives:

  • Dealing with stereotypes and prejudices
  • Developing awareness of cultural phenomena
  • Practicing a change of perspective
  • Recognizing one’s own cultural influence

Credits: 2–3 ECTS in the Studium Generale / Fundamentale / Study Abroad module depending on the department, 2 ECTS for exchange students.

Dates for the 2026 summer semester:

This workshop takes place as a two-day intensive seminar and is led by our trainer Lina Chihabi.

Being Buddies (EN)

With Being Buddies, you can help international students get started in Hildesheim. Each semester, we offer a supporting workshop to which you’ll be invited as a buddy pair. The workshop usually takes place online via BBB shortly before the semester begins. 

You can find more information about registration and the program’s content on the Buddy Program website.

The University of Hildesheim also offers many other great opportunities to support international students. Participation in the International Writing Partnerships, a language tandem, or involvement in the DAWID project or the Erasmus Student Network can also be credited toward the Certificate for Intercultural Communication and Competence (CICC).

Would you like to join us?

With us, you can gain experience as an intercultural trainer. We are always looking for peer tutors who would like to help lead intercultural workshops in German or English. To that end, we offer peer tutor training on an ongoing basis. The go for IQ project team will provide you with tips and tricks for designing intercultural workshops, and you will have the opportunity to test out the planned workshop sessions. 

You can have your participation as a peer tutor recognized as intercultural engagement toward the Certificate for Intercultural Communication and Competence (CICC).
