Anke Graneß: Philosophie in Afrika. Herausforderungen einer globalen Philosophiegeschichte. Berlin: Suhrkamp 2023.

How can we decolonize philosophy? An important contribution to this project can be made by its historiography, and it is precisely the view of Africa that offers approaches for a transformation in a global perspective. Indeed, the examination of the continent - from ancient Egypt to West Africa to the African diaspora - raises fundamental questions about how to deal with traditions of thought of oral societies as well as with alternative sources and practices of philosophy. Likewise, ethical questions arise about the role of religion, racism, and slavery in philosophy or about the interpretation and appropriation of intellectual heritage. In her major book, Anke Graneß uses the history of philosophy in Africa to sketch the basic lines of a new historiography of philosophy.

Rolf Elberfeld: Dekoloniales Philosophieren.

Calls to decolonise thinking and scholarship have become ever more insistent in recent years and have now reached European universities. The present volume seeks to explain why philosophy also needs to undergo a process of decolonisation, and what such a process might mean for research and teaching in the subject. A central point is to re-examine the long-denied involvement of European philosophy in European expansion and colonialism. Against this background, the book examines issues around the development of academically-based “racial theory” in philosophy and the Eurocentric constructions of history in the 18th and 19th centuries. It suggests approaches to overcoming Eurocentric philosophy and asks how ethical and epistemic responsibility can be taken in the process of decolonising thought.

Rolf Elberfeld, Philosophieren in einer globalisierten Welt. Wege zu einer transformativen Phänomenologie, Alber: Freiburg i.B. 2017  [Table of Contents]

Hildesheim: Olms 2023. [Open Access]

This reprint of the book "Acta Philosopharum, das ist, Nachricht von der Philosophie des Frauenzimmers" (1721) by Christoph August Heumann presents an early philosophical-historical work dedicated to the lives and philosophical contributions of 33 outstanding intellectual women in the history of European philosophy. It contains a comprehensive introduction to Heumann's work and the significance of the "Acta Philosopharum", an overview of selected histories of scholarly women from the 14th century onwards as well as of the the current state of knowledge regarding the 33 scholars discussed by Heumann.

Dominique Epple (Hrsg.) Christoph August Heumann: Methodische Überlegungen zur Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung. Hildesheim: Olms 2023. [Open Access]

Despite being a key thinker in 18th century discourses on the historiography of philosophy, C. A. Heumann‘s (1681–1764) contributions are mostly forgotten. His Acta Philosophorum played a crucial role in defining the historiography of philosophy as a discipline and in establishing philosophy exclusively as a European mode of thinking. Being originally published over many volumes, this new edition assembles the key passages for the first time as a coherent text. A detailed introduction aims at elucidating Heumann’s basic ideas on philosophical historiography and takes a critical stance towards his eurocentrism in dealing with the history of philosophy. The primary text is supplemented by annotations and an extensive bibliography.

Sool Park (Ed.) Histories of Philosophy and Thought in Korean Language A Bibliographical Guide from 1835 to 2021. Hildesheim: Olms 2022. [Open Access]

In retrospect, historiography of philosophy and thought in the Korean language extends back to the 8th century. This bibliography offers a comprehensive guide to this relatively long time span with complex developments. Using thematic and regional categories, it attempts to demonstrate the whole landscape of Korean scholarship on histories of philosophy and thought. The introductory text offers a chronological reconstruction of the history of philosophical historiography in Korea, filling the gap between the premodern and modern discourses. It focuses mainly on two aspects: 1) The modern transformation of the traditional Korean historiographical knowledge and method, developed and cultivated by Confucian and Buddhist scholars. 2) The diversification of philosophical historiography after this process of globalization and methodical transformation, resulting in an own representation of the world history of philosophy. The case of Korea is especially interesting because it produced ist own versions of history despite drastically changing hegemonic constellations. It provides an excellent example of alternative histories of philosophy, written at the periphery of Eurocentric and Sinocentric order.

Franz Gmainer-Pranzl und Lara Hofner (eds.): Polylog als Aufklärung? Interkulturell-philosophische Impulse. Wien: facultas 2023.

Histories of Philosophy and Thought in the Japanese Language:
A Bibliographical Guide from 1835 to 2021
. Hildesheim: Olms 2022. [Open Access]

This bibliographical guide gives a comprehensive overview of the historiography of philosophy and thought in the Japanese language through an extensive and thematically organized collection of relevant literature. Comprising over one thousand entries, the bibliography shows not only how extensive and complex the Japanese tradition of philosophical and intellectual historiography is, but also how it might be structured and analyzed to make it accessible to a comparative and intercultural approach to the historiography of philosophy worldwide. The literature is categorized and organized according to thematic focus areas such as geographical regions and continents, nations or peoples, religious traditions and philosophical teachings such as Buddhism, Islam, Shintō, and Confucianism, as well as disciplines such as ethics, aesthetics, and political thought. The bibliography is accompanied by an introduction outlining the research method as well as quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyzing the material, followed by a chronological overview of the historiography of philosophy and thought in the Japanese language and of the Japanese tradition of writing “world histories of philosophy.” As a first step towards a “history of the historiography of philosophy” in non-European languages, we hope that this guide will provide a useful tool for interculturally oriented scholarship aimed at a non-Eurocentric and diversified historiography of philosophy in a global perspective.

Rolf Elberfeld (ed.), Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung in globaler Perspektive, Meiner: Hamburg 2017 [Table of Contents]

Program of the Conference (2016)

Globalization of the history of philosophy and the idea of a transformative phenomenology

Rolf Elberfeld, Diogen, https://doi.org/10.1017/S0392192123000032

Since the beginning of the 21st century, globalization has become a central theme in the humanities. The increasing globalization of discourses in the humanities can already be observed in the 20th century. Within philosophy, the globalization of the thematic framework has been promoted in particular by the World Congresses of Philosophy since 1900. Stimulated by these developments, histories of different philosophies have emerged worldwide in many different languages. In addition, global histories of philosophy have increasingly been written since the beginning of the 21st century. This paper concludes by presenting the approach of a transformative phenomenology as a way of dealing with this thematic diversity in philosophy today.

Sklaverei und Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung

This article is dedicated to a topic that has been largely neglected in the historiography of philosophy to date: the position of philosophers towards the institution of slavery. Especially in survey works on the history of philosophy, positions on slavery and colonial conquest are not addressed, but have so far only been discussed in a few individual studies. From the beginning of European expansion, however, philosophical and political theories no longer emerged independently of these developments, as the expansion forced reflection on how to deal with the conquered regions and peoples, and thus on the problematic sides of the ‘voyages of discovery’: land grabbing, subjugation and slavery. Such entanglements are briefly explained using John Locke as an example. In view of the “colonial ensnarement of the Enlightenment” (Elberfeld) and the need for a critical examination of it, I propose as a methodological approach to include texts by thinkers of African origin, who had first-hand experiences of the institution of slavery and critically reflected on their own social position, the social and political conditions of their time as well as moral questions. Using three selected Black thinkers, the poet Phillis Wheatley (1753–1784), the abolitionist Olaudah Equiano (1745–1797) and the theologian Jacobus Elisa Johannes Capitein (ca. 1717–1747), I discuss the relevance of texts by former slaves for the historiography of philosophy.

The status of oral traditions in the history of philosophy: Methodological considerations

Anke Graness, Sout African Journal of Philosophy, p. 181-194

https://doi.org/10.1080/02580136.2022.2062986

Today, there is a growing consensus among philosophers in Africa, Latin America and other regions of the world that the history of philosophy has to consider both written and oral sources in the reconstruction of the history of philosophy. Even though it is usually not denied that philosophy also expresses itself in oral practices, such as conversation or instruction, the question remains as to how oral philosophical traditions can become part of a history of philosophy. This is subject to a number of methodological questions. On the basis of discourses in contemporary African philosophy as well as examples from other regions of the world, this article discusses selected methodological challenges that oral traditions pose for the historiography of philosophy, with a focus on the relation between philosophy and written texts and philosophy and practice. It is argued that a turn to philosophical practices can offer new insights into philosophy in oral societies.

(Histories of Philosophy in Global Perspective. A Conversation with Anke Graneß)

Zeitschrift weiter denken.

Wer hat's erfunden? - Über Vergangenheit und Zukunft interkulturellen Philosophierens (German podcast)

Guest: Rolf Elberfeld

Intercultural philosophizing is not an invention of our time. Rolf Elberfeld, who is trying to push the study of philosophy beyond European borders at the University of Hildesheim and make it practical (again), knows this too.
Together with Michael Hampe, he talks in this podcast about Kitarō Nishida, who in his philosophy tries to incorporate the perspectives of other regions of the world into his own and in this respect can be considered an intercultural philosopher. At the same time, Nishida was precariously entangled in Japan's nationalist aspirations.
Hampe and Elberfeld also discuss Leibniz and Wolff, two European representatives of philosophy who moved affirmatively in the direction of Chinese philosophy. Elberfeld wants to promote intercultural philosophizing in which all traditions exchange ideas and learn from each other. Looking both to the East and to one's own philosophical past could, for example, help to free European philosophy from its infatuation with writing essays and enrich it with practices, be it meditation or artistic activity.

The treasure hunt for women philosophers

The conference Non-Canonical Women in the Histories of Philosophy is the second part of our conference series on women philosophers in a global perspective. The ambition of this series is to recreate the knowledge of underrepresented women philosophers who have been left out of the canon up to this point. Priyanka Jha (Banaras Hindu University) talks about Indian women thinkers and the quest of reshaping intellectual histories. Un-Sunn Lee (Sejong University) presents critical perspectives on modernity and women of Korean Confucianism. Khimaja Connell (University of the West Indies) gives us an introduction to Caribbean women philosophers and Betty Wambui (State University of New York) shows us ideas of African women philosophers. The first conference Women Philosophers in the Process of Decolonization had a focus on feminist perspectives with presentations by Margaret McLaren, Shay Welch, Stephanie Rivera Berruz and Tiesha Cassel.

Workshop: Philosophy and Exclusion

Philosophy often presents itself as an enterprise in which everyone is invited to participate. On closer inspection, however, it is striking to note that a significant number of people have been and are being excluded by philosophers as unfit for philosophy. If we look at the history of Western philosophy, we soon find that certain human beings have been radically excluded time and time again. Since the eighteenth century, for example, it can be clearly stated that philosophers who were not perceived as male, who were not racialized as white, or who were not ascribed to Western culture, were systematically excluded from philosophy. However, in this very story, we cannot find not a single philosophical argument that could justify this exclusion. This is hardly surprising; it is doubtful that there can be such a philosophical justification. Who should legitimately be able to have this right? And yet it is a factual reality that philosophy is not ruled by all human beings, but only by very specific human beings. This is certainly not because only these particular human beings practice philosophy, but because these particular human beings, knowingly or not, keep alive a tradition of exclusion. In this workshop, we wish to expose this phenomenon from different perspectives be it based on examples, be it through general reflections. We want to promote an exchange on this problematic dimension of philosophy and its history and thus contribute to the ongoing change of the discourse and a renewal of the canon.

Jenseits von Europa – Eine neue Weltgeschichte des Denkens

(Beyond Europe - A New World History of Thought)

"Sternstunde der Philosophie"

with Anke Graneß und Peter Adamson

Greece as the cradle of democracy, Europe as the continent of the Enlightenment - is this actually true? Or is the cultural self-image based on myths far removed from facts and colonial, even racist exclusions? A conversation about a new, truly global understanding of philosophy.

It all began with the ancient Greeks, then came the dark Middle Ages, the Renaissance brought a new dawn, until the Enlightenment brought the light of reason and freedom to the modern world. All this, of course, from Europe. All this, of course, primarily thanks to brilliant male individual thinkers. This is the standard story that the so-called West has been telling about itself for a good 250 years. As the actual cradle of philosophy, universal values, modern science. But in the course of new research and a truly global historiography, it is becoming increasingly clear how radically incomplete, grotesquely one-sided, in part simply wrong, and not least colonially and racially narrowed this view of the history of thought is. Is a revolution of the entire self-understanding imminent in the sign of a broadened historical consciousness? And if so, with what consequences for a philosophy and global culture of the future? Barbara Bleisch explores with philosopher Anke Graneß, author of the book "Philosophy in Africa," and philosopher Peter Adamson, host of the podcast "History of Philosophy without any gaps," among others, the consequences and also pitfalls of a decolonized history of philosophy.

In ihrem Buch Philosophie in Afrika.

A global view on the histories of philosophy

(EU Research Summer Autumn 2019)

“Since the 2018 World Congress of Philosophy it has become more evident than ever that the field of Philosophy has globaly transformed itself, yet this is not currently reflected within the historical framework. We spoke to Professor Rolf Elberfeld about his work in developing a global framework on the history of philosophy, which will help pave the way for doing philosophy in a global perspective in future.

While many nations and cultures across all the world have their own traditions of thinking, philosophy came to be conventionalised as a purely European project by the late 18th century. Now Professor Rolf Elberfeld and his colleagues in a new DFG-funded project aim to develop a more inclusive picture. “We aim to find a new framework for the history of philosophy, which includes different traditions,” he outlines. While European philosophers have made important contributions to the field, Professor Elberfeld believes it’s important not to neglect traditions from other parts of the world in the wider historiography. “One of the main aims of the project is to put the history of philosophy in global perspective,” he says. [...]

We have a pluralised picture of the history of philosophy. We see many different traditions in China, Japan, India, Africa, Latin America, and other parts of the world.”
