8.-19. Century

Preliminary remark on the linguistic classification: All documents on history of philosophy in Korea prior to 20th century are written in Classical Chinese, at least as printed documents. We still classify this as "history of philosophy in Korean language" - due to the text-pragmatic fact that Classical Chinese in Korea was associated with a special practice of reading, writing and thinking that was not only in phonetic but also grammatical terms significantly divergent from Classical Chinese. A long absence of identity between the spoken and the written language in East Asian context also demonstrates a very different understanding and interest in language, which cannot be completely conceptualised by the modern linguistic concept of national languages.
