André Hinderlich

André Hinderlich (he/him) is a performance artist, theater director, actor, dramaturg, and a graduate in social theory and theater studies. After completing his bachelor’s degree in theater, film, and media studies at the universities of Vienna, Copenhagen, and Salamanca, he studied performing arts (acting, M.A.) at the Mozarteum in Salzburg (Thomas Bernhard Institute). From 2011 to 2021, he worked as an actor and theater director at the Thalia Theater, the Neues Theater, the Halle Opera, the Leipzig Dance Theater, and most recently alongside the Dutch collective Wunderbaum at the Theaterhaus Jena.

In 2019, Hinderlich received a basic certificate in cultural and media management from the Hamburg University of Music and Theater. Parallel to his permanent engagement at the Theaterhaus Jena, he studied social theory at the University of Jena, where he earned a second Master’s degree. His Master’s thesis, *Nature-Culture Relations in Bruno Latour. Relation(s) and Differentiation(s) at the Same Time was published in 2023 in the BestMasters series by Springer Nature. Subsequently, Hinderlich worked as a dramaturg at the Theater Altenburg Gera in a permanent position from 2023 to 2025. As a freelancer, Hinderlich has also been active as an assistant director, in acting and film, photography, and theater and performance education.

Since 2017, he has been creating his own artistic theater projects and performance works, for which Hinderlich appears on the stage, writes texts, directs, or serves as a dramaturg. In close collaboration with ARGEkultur Salzburg, past projects have included the lecture-performances perma.kult (2023) and Nichts (2022), the video project Gaia (2022, Toihaus Salzburg), and Peter Handke’s Selbstbezichtigung (2019, ARGEkultur Salzburg) and the Dada Project Die Ursonate by Kurt Schwitters (2017). For his self-directed short film Stumm, Hinderlich was honored with the 2018 BIIF Award for Best Actor in Karlsruhe. For his theater work alien(n)ation, he received second place at the Monospektakel Theater "Die Tonne" in Reutlingen. Hinderlich is interested in post-dramatic, contemporary theater, play development, interspecies performances, art installations, and theater art projects that explore experimentation and socially relevant themes.
