Thesis
The thesis offers the opportunity to independently apply and deepen the knowledge acquired during your studies. Possible topics for Bachelor's and Master's theses can arise both from the research areas of the University of Hildesheim and in cooperation with companies. This opens up a variety of perspectives, either through the further development of your own study focus or through the transfer of knowledge into practice.
Bachelor's thesis: completion time 14 weeks (15 CP)
Master's thesis: completion time 6 months (27 CP)
Supervision is provided by lecturers of the respective degree program and, if necessary, by contact persons in the cooperating company. At the end, the thesis is presented and discussed in a colloquium.
Information on final theses in cooperation with companies:
Companies often advertise specific topics. For this reason, it is important to contact a supervisor from the faculty at an early stage. The final assignment of topics and recognition is carried out by the university - the level of the thesis must meet the requirements of the degree program. Without prior agreement, there is a risk that an external thesis will not be recognized as coursework.
Current calls, topics and contact persons for thesis topics:
- Business Administration & Operations Research (BWL)
- Information Systems and Enterprise Modeling (ISUM) | Phillip Gottschewski-Meyer
- Intelligent Information Systems (IIS) | Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Althoff
- Software Systems Engineering (SSE) | Dr. Holger Eichelberger and Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmid
- Information Systems and Machine Learning (ISMLL) | Prof. Dr. Dr. Lars Schmidt-Thieme
- Media Informatics (IMAI) | Dr. Jörg Cassens
Project work
Project work is a central component of the Information Management and Information Technology (IMIT) degree program and teaches practical and research-oriented skills. It is particularly suitable as preparation for the Bachelor's thesis and is ideally carried outsecond half of the degree programme after the basic courses. The project work always concludes with written documentation and, if applicable, a presentation.
Finding topics:
Ready-made topic suggestions are regularly offered by research groups in courses and on the notice boards of the institutes. These arise from courses, current research projects or collaborations with partner companies.
Students' own topic suggestions are explicitly welcome. Suitable topics are
- Interesting questions from the business internship.
Internship companies are usually happy to support these projects, as the familiarization period has already taken place. - Consolidation of content from courses attended.
It is best to contact the relevant lecturer directly. - Suitable topics from the private or professional environment related to information technology, business administration or information science.
Registration:
Before starting, the project work must be supervised by lecturers from the IMIT degree program. As a rule, it is not possible to have work already completed recognized as project work at a later date.
The scope and content of the work are agreed with the supervisor and recorded on the registration form (format: MS Word). Upon receipt of the registration form by the Examination Office, the project work is deemed to have been registered.
Implementation and assessment
Important methods of project management, scientific work and teamwork skills are promoted as part of the project work.
Once the project work has been completed, the supervisor will assess it and issue the certificate of achievement.
Business internship
The business internship is a central component of the Bachelor's degree programs in Information Systems, Information Management and Information Technology (IMIT) and Applied Computer Science. The internship lasts at least 10 weeks and is ideally completed after completing the basic courses, starting in the third semester. A full-time internship during the lecture-free period is recommended; alternatively, part-time internships during the lecture period are also possible.
The partner companies offer a variety of tasks in which the knowledge acquired during the course can be applied in practice. The internship often leads to further topics for a later Bachelor's thesis. A current overview of the partner companies, contact persons as well as typical areas of responsibility and experiences of previous interns are available in the password-protected Learnweb area of the University of Hildesheim.
The business internship concludes with a colloquium in which all interns of a semester share their experiences. Interested students are also invited to attend and can gain valuable insights for their own practical phase.
Further information and support can be found on the business internship information page.
