Bug Library for fraction arithmetic and BUGFIX
To demonstrate the abilities of the algorithm a diagnostic production system (bug library) for fraction arithmetic was developed. Fraction arithmetic is well known for the high number of different incorrect strategies.
The bug library is the result of the analysis of over 6000 incorrect calculations of 500 pupils (grade 7). It contains around 200 correct and incorrect productions and covers the topics:
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers, fractions, mixed numbers and any combinations.
- Cancellation (very complex)
- Converting numbers into fractions, improper fractions into mixed numbers and back.
We designed and implemented the algorithm within the diagnostic module BUGFIX. BUGFIX supports the specification of the diagnosis production system in a special language, which is compiled during runtime. So BUGFIX is prepared for automated bug library learning.
