Media Informatics (5495)

Form: 3 SWS Lecture, 2 SWS Tutorial; 8 ECTS.

In this module, the students learn about the history of digital media, current media theories and psychological foundations of media informatics. Building upon this knowledge, we look at how multimedia data is produced, digitized, encoded, compressed and edited. Students learn the basics of multimedia content and will be able to make use of multimedia technologies in user-friendly systems.

Contextual Design of Interactive Systems (5496)

Form: 2 SWS Lecture, 1 SWS Tutorial; 5 ECTS

The students deepen their knowledge about principles for the goal-oriented formulation and systematic use of principles, methods and tools for the development and use of multimedia software systems. Knowledge in particular in the areas hypermedia, augmented and virtual reality as well as ambient multimedia systems is deepened. Student learn to conceptualize, design and implement multimedia systems and make use of them in real world environments.

Data and Process Visualization

Form: 2 SWS Lecture, 1 SWS Tutorial; 5 ECTS

In this module, students learn to know different principles, methods and processes for the visualization and exploration of data and information. Starting from cognitive and semiotic principles, different types of data are examined and methods for their visualization are introduced. Furthermore, methods for the visualization of simulation and processes are discussed.

Contextualized Computing and Ambient Intelligent Systems

Form: 2 SWS Lecture, 1 SWS Tutorial; 5 ECTS

In this module, students learn to know different principles, methods, and processes for the development of contextualized and ambient intelligent systems. Contextualized applications take context parameters, such as location, time, persons present, into account. Ambient intelligent systems are ubiquitous and pervasive and become part of the environment. Starting form cognitive and semiotic principles, it is discussed how contextual parameters can be analyzed and modeled. Different methods and tools for context reasoning are examined. Furthermore, challenges for the development of ambient systems are outlined and technologies for their implementation presented.

Seminar in Media Informatics (Topic in 5451)

Form: 2 SWS Seminar, 3 ECTS

The students deepen their analytic and methodological competences for the self-guided study of current research areas. Through writing a small paper, preparing and giving a talk as well as joined discussions, the students' understanding of prior acquired knowledge is enhanced. In addition, methodological competences are acquired that allow students to adjust their level of knowledge to changing technological developments or needs of society.

Problem-Based Learning in Media Informatics (5497)

Form: 3 SWS Lab Course; 5 ECTS

This lab course complements the computer science competences acquired in the precedent semesters with a special focus on the development of multimedia systems. Successful students design and implement small and medium sized systems in the area of media informatics. They apply principles, methods and tools learned and know their capabilities and limits.


The courses in media informatics can be credited in different areas in our study programs Applied Informatics, Information Management und Information Technology (IMIT) and Business Informatics or the International Master's Program in Data Analytics as well a the Teacher Training in Informatics. Please consult the relevant examination regulations and the different study handbooks for details.
