Business Models and Sustainability

The rapid deterioration of the natural environment and concerns over social responsibility are just some examples of current issues that pose fundamental challenges for our society. Facing these challenges ‘sustainability’ has increasingly gained importance in both business research and practice. To contribute, businesses need to transform themselves to fulfill new stakeholder demands such as being environmentally friendly, and thus, need to develop more sustainable business models that find novel ways (e.g., through digitalization of processes and products) for delivering and capturing value. These novel ways often premise not only to rethink the value proposition, but rather radical innovations across entire businesses.

Central questions therefore include the specification of sustainable business models as well as approaches and (software) tools for the construction, adaptation, and analysis of a business model in respect of economic, ecological, and social sustainability.
