Correction counseling

Have you written an academic paper and need help with proofreading the German language?

Proofreading advice is available for international students (whose first language is not German).

What does proofreading advice involve?

  • Proofreading advice focuses on the German language in your text.
  • You will receive tips on how to improve your text yourself.

We proceed as follows:

request

Students send a request to kbdawid@uni-hildesheim.de with the following information: title of the course, number of pages, title of the paper, and the deadline, and include the finished text (either a complete chapter or a complete paper) with their request.

It is not mandatory to complete both phases. Students can decide for themselves whether their paper should go through only one of the two phases or both phases of the consultation process. This preference can be indicated in the request.

After a short time, students will receive a confirmation of receipt and information on how to proceed.

marking phase

Spelling and grammar errors, as well as stylistic and lexical issues, are marked by the proofreading team.

All spelling and grammar errors are marked in yellow, while all stylistic and vocabulary issues are marked in green.

Individual revision phaseStudents try to revise the marked sections on their own.
Joint revision and discussion phaseWe will discuss your text together in a video conference. We will look at the revisions, revise the remaining problematic areas, and, above all, explain what the problems are.

What does the correction consultation not include?

  • No questions about the content of the work will be discussed.
  • You will not receive a fully corrected text, as you will need to revise your text yourself.

What are the goals of the correction consultation?

  • You will learn how to systematically revise texts yourself.
  • You will receive support in the language learning process.
  • You will be able to write future texts with greater linguistic confidence.

What does this mean for the declaration of independence?
If you use the correction service, please indicate this in the declaration of independence, e.g., by adding the following note:  The correction service provided as part of the DAWID project (German as a second, foreign, new ... scientific language) was used to revise the language of this paper.

Students in the International Communication and Translation, International Technical Communication – Languages and Technology, and Media Text and Media Translation programs should clarify in advance with their instructors (e.g., during office hours) whether and to what extent they may receive support from the correction advisory service during the revision process.

Individual language learning advice

Would you like to improve your (academic) German, rehearse presentations, receive support in preparing for consultations with lecturers, etc.?

Language learning consultations take place every Wednesday and Friday (9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)!

What does the consultation involve?

We offer individual counseling sessions. We help you discover your own resources so that you can improve your academic German as independently as possible and achieve your learning goals in relation to academic language, enabling you to cope well with everyday life at university. The focus is not only on writing, but (and above all) on oral communication. Language learning counseling is relevant for the following areas, for example:

  • oral presentations (rehearsing, receiving feedback on your language skills),
  • preparing for a consultation
  • preparing for an oral exam
  • oral participation in seminars

The focus of the consultation is based on your individual needs. It is important to note that language learning consultation always focuses solely on your language goals. No content-related (subject-specific) questions can be answered.

Who is the consultation for?

For all students at the University of Hildesheim for whom German is not their first language.

When and where?

Individual consultations take place on Wednesdays and Fridays, during which we provide you with personalized advice and answer your questions - throughout the lecture period and during the lecture-free period.
