BA Plus "Cultural Policy in an International Context"
A study option with an international focus
Are you interested in the international context of cultural policy models or in the role of arts and culture in social transformational processes or international artistic co-productions or even international concepts of cultural mediation, cultural organisation and cultural management?
Since 2015, undergraduate students in the course Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice, who are interested in deepening their studies from a perspective of international comparison, are able to complete a focused course of studies with this study option. With this they develop and refine an internationally aligned profile. The study option is offered and accompanied by the Institute for Cultural Policy and the UNESCO chair "Cultural Policy for the Arts in Development". The application for this study option is due in the 2nd semester, i.e. after starting the study course Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice in Hildesheim.
Study profile / Structure / Format of study option
The course of studies in this study option comprises a regular duration of 8 semesters (instead of 6 semesters in the regular study course) and includes, besides continuing the regular course of studies, an internationalized curriculum at University of Hildesheim as well as a 2-semester partner country phase during the 5th and 6th semester. Starting from the 3rd semester the internationalized curriculum will be completed and encompasses the visit of special Bachelor Plus colloquia which deal with the technical and intercultural preparation and postprocessing of the stay abroad. It also means that at least one attended course per semester needs to have an international cultural-political basis. Depending on the language skill, attending language courses might be mandatory.
Partner countries and schools are being evaluated right now, and possibly updated. Individual propositions are possible, for example through our Erasmus partner schools. Previous partners have been (among others):
France: Université Aix-Marseille, Médiation Culturelle de l’Art, Marseille
Lithuania: Vilnius Academy of the Arts, Vilnius
Mexico: Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, different artistic study courses at Facultad de Artes and the Escuela de Artes Escénicas, Toluca
Serbia: University of Arts in Belgrade, Belgrade
South Africa: (new partner university currently under consideration)
Turkey: Istanbul Bilgi University, School of Arts and Cultural Management, Istanbul
During the partner country phase the students continue their studies and complete a vocational preparation internship in the cultural field. They choose between a focus on their studies (2 semesters of studies and a short internship) or a more balanced approach between studies and internship (1 semester of studies and one semester of internship(s)). Recommendations differ depending on the partner country.
In reference to the chosen partner country the Bachelor Plus students research and discover international cultural relationships and, after having returned, they profoundly reflect the stay abroad.
With the bachelor thesis, in which the students of the study option deal with a cultural-political and/or artistic subject within an international context, the students top off their focused undergraduate studies.
Application and Admission
Prerequisites for the Bachelor Plus study option are a passed aptitude test in the study course Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Practice as well as the completion of the first two semesters in Hildesheim. Depending on the partner country students must prove languages skills in English, French or Spanish at least at B1 level, ideally B2.
The application comprises a filled-in application form, a motivational letter (up to four pages) which goes into the first choice for the partner country, a CV which shows first international experiences, proof of attending an international course and a preparational colloquium for the application, a declaration of written and oral language skills as well as further certificates.
