A study program with an international focus

Are you interested in the international comparison of cultural policy models or the role of art and culture in social transformation processes, or even international artistic co-productions and international concepts of cultural mediation, cultural organization, and cultural management? Since 2014, the UNESCO Chair at the Institute for Cultural Policy has been coordinating an exciting internationally oriented study option that we closely support.

Bachelor's students of cultural studies and artistic practice who are interested in viewing their study contexts from an international comparative perspective (including topics such as decolonization, cultural diversity, fair cooperation, and fair culture, etc.) can develop and sharpen an internationally oriented profile through this study option. Applications for the study variant are submitted in the second semester, i.e., after beginning studies in cultural studies and artistic practice in Hildesheim.

Structure of the study option

The Bachelor Plus study option has a standard duration of 8 semesters (instead of 6 semesters in the regular Bachelor's program) and, in addition to continuing the study of cultural studies and artistic practice, includes an internationalized curriculum at the University of Hildesheim and a two-semester period abroad in the 5th and 6th semesters at the partner university. The internationalized curriculum is completed starting in the 3rd semester and includes attending special Bachelor Plus colloquia dedicated to the academic and intercultural preparation and follow-up of the stay abroad, as well as attending at least one course per semester with an international cultural policy focus and, depending on individual knowledge, attending language courses. Starting in the third semester, students prepare for their stay in a partner country in the fifth and sixth semesters.

You are free to choose the partner countries and partner universities and can change your choice after your application has been successful. Our Erasmus partner universities (+ additional list from the International Office + collection of links to specific universities and degree programs) can provide guidance. Previous Bachelor Plus students have been to France, Lithuania, Mexico, Serbia, South Africa, Turkey, and Morocco, for example. We are happy to put you in touch with our returnees so that you can benefit from their impressions. 

During your time abroad, you will not only study at your partner university, but also complete a career-preparatory internship in the field of culture. You can choose to focus on your studies (i.e., two semesters of study + a short internship) or balance your studies and internship (i.e., one semester of study + one semester of internship/internships). There are different recommendations depending on the partner country.

Students in the Bachelor Plus program round off their focused bachelor's studies with a bachelor's thesis in which they deal intensively with a cultural-political and/or artistic topic with an international reference.

At the Institute for Cultural Policy, the study option is supervised by program director Prof. Dr. Julius Heinicke and program coordinator Dr. Daniel Gad, who is available to answer your questions at kupo-international(at)uni-hildesheim.de.
 

• Passing an aptitude test in the Cultural Studies and Artistic Practice program.
• Completion of the first two semesters in Hildesheim. 
• Self-assessment of language skills in the language(s) relevant to your studies and internship. (Certificates or high school diploma or even an informal assessment)
• A completed form template.
• A letter of motivation of up to four pages, which addresses the first choice of partner country. (See details in the Ba Plus Guide)
• A resume that demonstrates initial international experience.
• Proof of a) attendance at a seminar with an international focus and b) the preparatory colloquium (information event usually in April/May, 2nd semester).

The application deadline is June 15 of each year.

You will then usually receive confirmation of acceptance at the beginning of September.

Here you will find the forms for documenting your Ba-Plus curriculum. In addition to the POS system, you must
also enter your modules in these forms. There is a different form for each phase of your studies (before, during, and after your time abroad). The forms must be submitted to the program coordinator for countersigning.
