UNESCO-Chair
UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy
The UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy is headed by Prof. Dr. Julius Heinicke. The chair team's teaching and research activities focus on cultural policy issues and challenges in increasingly diverse societies, linking topics in foreign and domestic cultural policy.
Against this backdrop, our research focuses on the following key topics:
- Analyzing the potential of art and culture to implement and reflect on topics such as transformation, diversity, sustainability, anti-discrimination, and social justice at global and local levels (global-local transformations)
- Discussing and developing regional, national, European, and international strategies for implementing the “right to art and culture” in society and politics and shaping it democratically (right to art and culture)
- Researching marginalized spaces and groups in order to generate different forms of knowledge for cultural policy decisions (marginalized spaces, groups, and cultures of knowledge)
- The investigation of the significance and need for the implementation of artistic and cultural creation in educational and social institutions and school curricula (art as education, cultural education)
- The scientific monitoring of the cultural-political linking of art institutions with social and socially relevant spaces and strategies (third spaces)
We not only conduct research in all areas, but they are also part of our study programs and collaborations. We always conduct research and teaching in close regional, national, and international exchange and in cooperation with cultural, artistic, and cultural policy organizations, associations, and institutions. Although we see ourselves as an independent institution whose freedom in research and teaching is enshrined in the German constitution, dialogue and networking with these actors is of great importance to us.
