PhD Project "Situations of aesthetic-social negotiation
An ecological approach to reception practice" (completed)
The research project investigated to what extent art reception can be understood as a practice that is equally aesthetic, i.e. ambiguous and stubborn, and social, describable as a relational interaction of bodies and things. Accordingly, the concept of an aesthetic-social negotiation should be used to describe how reception practice oscillates between situational resonances and aesthetic-social friction. It was to be shown how specific exchange situations come about in each case, which are characterized by mutual influence and their own visibility and lead to unpredictable networks of relationships.
The material of the investigation consisted of situations that emerged from artistic settings between installation, interaction and participation and in which a relational dynamic was expressed in a formative way, thus challenging the conceptual work in each case in its own way. On the basis of Isabelle Stengers' "Ecology of Practices", the aim was to trace, on the one hand, the interplay of practices of reception, staging, performance, curation, mediation, supervision, and art criticism in a non-hierarchical way in situations of reception. Furthermore, reception practice as a hitherto neglected dimension was to be granted its own idiosyncratic productivity, establishing relationships that transcend staging and inscribe themselves in subsequent practices beyond the situation.
About
Jens Fehrenbacher studied media and cultural studies at the HHU Düsseldorf (B.A.) and cultural mediation with the focus on music at the Universität Hildesheim (M.A.). Since 2015 he has worked as a freelance artist in the field of interactive sound und media art and in cooperation with free collectives of theaters. Furthermore, he works at the interface with mediation and aesthetic practice, for example at documenta 14. From 2019 to 2022, he has been a researcher at the DFG research training group "Aesthetic Practice" at the University of Hildesheim.
His research interests include:
interactive art, aesthetic practice, phenomenology, performativity, poststructuralism and theories of cultural mediation.
