Marie-Charlotte Simons

PhD Project "Every body: Pose! The pose as aesthetic practice" (completed)

Marie-Charlotte Simons researched the pose as an aesthetic practice using the example of the show sports professional wrestling, bodybuilding and synchronized swimming: When looking at the athletes, one thing became apparent - they are all trained to strike the respective poses as perfectly as possible. Her hypothesis was that the pose represents a special time-figure that is always bound to its performative, physical execution. She asked about that moment of coagulated time in which the living body seemingly freezes into a statue, into an image. It is precisely this temporality of the pose that made it possible to consider it as an object and method of research through aesthetic practice.

About

Marie-Charlotte Simons studied for a master’s degree in staging of arts and media with a focus on theatre and popular culture at the University of Hildesheim. Her research and work in theory and practice focus on stagings of the body in popular culture and their manifestations in pop, sport and performance. She works as a director, dramaturg and author in the independent artistic scene in various contexts; most recently she staged the play “Cow*Boys*” at the Zimmertheater Tübingen.
