Projektbeschreibung

Summary

The Institute of History at the University of Hildesheim emphasis' has been placed on “comparative modern and contemporary European history” with a view towards dimensions of the history of ideas and institutions. Now it will be discussed whether the EU is a postmodern and post-national empire of its own kind. The new motto of the academic teaching of the next three years (2016-2019) is to be characterized as “The History and Current Status of the EU in the light of the empire debate”. In comparison to empires of the Modern Era (Holy Roman Empire, Russian Tsardom, Ottoman Empire) and those of contemporary history (Fascist Italy, “Third Reich”, USSR) the EU is not an empire in the classic, traditional sense. The EEC and the EC consisted of a regional power with hegemonic traits and, with its further development into the EU, a global hegemonic power with postmodern traits. Based on original research in academic lessons and seminars the knowledge is to be extended to the EU in the context of the empire debate by new modern learning and teaching methods. An additional programme will be offered also with the video-documented public lecture series “Discussions on Europe” including international scholars, practitioners and eye-witnesses with the application of new analysis- and interpretation-methods (by use of Internet, E-Learning, Learnweb). Beside students and civic society members also teachers from schools in Hildesheim and their pupils will be the main recipients within the framework of the Center of Teacher Education and Education Research as well as  the new planned Campus of Further Education at the University of Hildesheim. The European Navigator (ENA) of the CVCE and the HISTCOMM3-Project documenting the history of the EU-Commission will profit from the results of this project. Broadening the horizons will be reached by a conference on the new topic „Aspects and Dimensions of the World Society“.
