Dr. Michael Fuhr

Director

Dr Michael Fuhr studied musicology with a focus on ethnomusicology, philosophy and art history at the University of Cologne and has worked as a research assistant and lecturer in Berlin, Cologne, Hanover, Göttingen and Frankfurt. From 2006 to 2008, he worked for the EU project DISMARC (Discovering Music Archives) in the Department of Ethnomusicology, Media Technology and Berlin Phonogram Archive of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin and was then a doctoral fellow at the Heidelberg Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europa: Shifting Asymmetries in a Global Context", where he was able to devote himself to the musical and cultural exchange processes between Asia and Europe in the project "Creative Dissonances: Music in a Global Context". In 2009 and 2010, he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for East Asian Studies at Sungkonghoe University in Seoul and conducted intensive field research in the South Korean pop music scene and music industry. His dissertation on the multiple globalisation processes of popular music using South Korea (K-pop) as an example has been published as a book entitled Globalization and Popular Music in South Korea: Sounding Out K-Pop by Routledge (2015). Most recently, he has worked in a collaborative research project on K-pop reception and fan culture in Europe (together with the Institute of Popular Music in Liverpool, the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange in Seoul and others). From 2013 to 2016, he was a research assistant in the Department of Ethnomusicology - World Music Study Centre at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media. In 2016, he took over the position of Managing Director at the Centre for World Music and Research Associate at the Institute for Music and Musicology at the University of Hildesheim. Since December 2020, he has held the position of Managing Director of the Centre for World Music. In the winter semester 2023/24, he is a substitute professor of ethnomusicology at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media.
