Histories in Motion. Remembrance Practices, Cultures of History and Historical Learning in German Migration Society

Start of the BMBF joint project “Histories in Motion. Remembrance Practices, Cultures of History and Historical Learning in German Migration Society"

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The University of Hildesheim with Prof. Dr. Viola Georgi, the Free University Berlin with Prof. Dr. Martin Lücke, the Georg Eckert Institute Leibniz Institute for International Textbook Research with Prof. Dr. Riem Spielhaus and the University of Paderborn with Prof. Dr. Johannes Meyer-Hamme are involved.

In cooperation with the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility Future”, the “Federal Agency for Civic Education” as well as museums, memorial sights, institutes of teacher training, professionals in non-formal historical education and school book publishers develop approaches to history learning in migration societies within the next three years. The project runs for three and a half years and has a funding volume of approximately 1 million euros. The University of Hildesheim receives 347,000 euros out of the funding.

Prof. Dr. Viola Georgi from the ZBI and her team examine the area of teachers and history education at schools. In history lessons, different perspectives and diverse memory needs of students and teachers meet and challenge the historical-cultural canon and curriculum. The subproject of the University of Hildesheim investigates the practices of teaching and what approaches and concepts of teaching already exist. The project also aims to develop concepts of historical learning that enable young people to deal sensitively and competently with historical forms of memory.
