Educational success strongly depends on individual characteristics such as previous knowledge, motivation and family resources. In addition, learning opportunities in educational institutions are important. The heterogeneity of the student body is an initial condition to which the provision of learning opportunities in the classroom and the design of the school climate must respond. The possibilities for teachers and headmasters to react to this challenge are significantly shaped by the institutional framework conditions of the education systems.
The Focal Point looks at characteristics of education systems and analyses how these lead to different framework conditions at the school and teaching levels and are ultimately linked to different patterns of inequality in education due to migration and stratification. The macro-perspective on systemic conditions implies an internationally comparative approach.
