International Guest Lecture 27.04.23: "We're here because you were there. Immigration and the End of Empire"

Ian Patel, PhD I London School of Economics and Political Science I Birkbeck College, University of London
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Viola B. Georgi, Sina Freund I Institute for Educational Sciences

This talk explores post-war migration to Europe, with a focus on the experiences of migrants to the British Isles after 1945. The British empire was dismantled in the first decades of the post-war era. Simultaneously, during the same period, British nationality retained its imperial scheme. This meant that migrants from former British colonies in the post-war era were legally entitled to enter, live and work in the British Isles. In the 1960s and early 1970s, however, British governments passed immigration laws targeting their own non-white citizens on the basis of race. This talk explores this extraordinary contradiction, as well as its motivations, its various effects, and the severe consequences for migrants themselves.
