According to this concept, sustainability has an ecocentric focus. While the concept of strong sustainability tends to be ecological, it is not an exclusively ecological concept, as it is based on the complementarity of all three areas of sustainability. Ecology nevertheless gets the highest priority and both the social and the economic must be oriented to the ecological carrying capacity of the earth. On the one hand, nature is said to have an intrinsic value, which is why the unconditional preservation of each species is not dependent on its usefulness to humans. Each species is understood as part of a multifunctional ecosystem. On the other hand, on an earth with finite resources, there are automatically limits, which is why the strong sustainability concept is a rather growth-critical one.
