Sustainability strategies

The sufficiency strategy

This strategy is primarily about challenging culturally embedded lifestyles and habits , such as consumption. What do we need for a good life? What do we not need? It starts with a change in user behavior and pursues the goal of reducing the use of resources. The sufficiency strategy is a growth-critical strategy that places environmentally and socially acceptable limits on economic activity and achieves a reduction in resource use by decreasing demand for products and goods.

  • Sufficiency examples include using energy sparingly or eating seasonal, vegan and regional foods.

The three strategies mentioned above can be thought of and implemented together, using the three-step principle (4):

  1. After that, the sufficiency strategy is to be applied first.
  2. If this is no longer applicable in the case of a trade or similar is no longer applicable, the consistency strategy should be applied.
  3. Should this also no longer be applicable in the event of a trade or similar, then the efficiency strategy should be applied.
