Project description
12 sewingstories As part of Your Goal – Your Action, we worked with 12sewingstories on a small collection of children’s jackets, primarily made from old clothes. The upcycling project was based on the principle of sufficiency, i.e. the idea of using existing resources (means of production, infrastructure, knowledge) as much as possible and developed a suitable production process. Central to the project were questions such as: What does fair fashion mean in concrete terms? How can the production of garments be made more sustainable? How can we, within our means, rethink production routes and produce high-quality clothing that is made available to student parents at low cost? How can we share this research process with others and contribute to greater awareness of sustainable living?# The ten geupcycled children’s jackets that were created are ultimately only part of the whole process. Because in this case, the journey was certainly the destination. Thus, we tested/researched ecological sustainability in a concrete way and made both processes and results accessible to a student audience. As hoped, we succeeded in networking with other (student) initiatives and local actors who supported us at different core points of the “textile chain”. We are enormously grateful, for example, for the cooperation with the Hildesheim second-hand store Klamotte, which supported us with donations of clothes, as well as the Faserwerk Hildesheim, which stood by us with advice and support, and the Stadtlabor e.V., which offered us a room to conclude the project. We succeeded in upgrading old things (used and discarded clothing) and transporting them back into the production cycle with the smallest possible CO2 footprint.
