Can you see us now?

PENGO is an international network of young cultural practitioners from Germany, Rwanda and Uganda. At the beginning of 2021 we founded the non-profit association PENGO Germany – International Cultural and Artistic Network e.V.. The name “Pengo” means “gap” in Swahili. We try to find gaps in the walls we come up against in our working and living together in global contexts. Walls built by hierarchical, exclusive and postcolonial structures. Maybe we can’t tear down walls through the art projects we do, but we can locate gaps in them, make interstices visible. Our project “CAN YOU SEE US NOW?” was presented from August 21 to September 1, 2021 at the Long Garden Center – The Free Cultural Gallery and from 04. shown at the Hildesheim Wallungen until August 05. Different artworks and the different perspectives of the artists* from Kigali, Kampala and Hildesheim from the international PENGO e.V. team were exhibited. What challenges and opportunities does the crisis present for cultural workers? Which projects could not be implemented, which were newly created? What does it actually mean to work in an international team at the moment? These questions will continue to be addressed in exhibition formats over the coming months and in our discourse format CAN YOU HEAR US NOW? treated until the end of 2021.
