Project description
More than a meal – Practicing sustainability at Vinzenzpforte
I spent three weeks volunteering at the ‘Vinzenzpforte’ social café in Hildesheim. The work of this organization is a contribution to the second goal for sustainable development – No Hunger. Vinzenzpforte procures surplus food and passes it on to people in need for a very small amount. This reduces food waste.
But the place is not just a café, it is also a community hub. People come in, sit together for a long time and chat. The café is full of laughter, joy and friendship. I helped out in the kitchen, preparing sandwiches, salads and cakes. I chatted with many people and learned more about their lifestyle while sharing mine. I also made a film about the organization that shows what sustainability in action looks like – with interviews, authentic scenes from the kitchen and behind-the-scenes looks – which will be published on the Vinzenzpforte website. I hope the film will inspire viewers to think about their own role in creating a more sustainable world, starting with the question: what happens to the food we don’t eat?
