Project description

How do I increase biodiversity on campus?

How can student engagement contribute to the promotion of biodiversity at the University of Hildesheim? This question was at the heart of the project. Building on the “Wild bees welcome” initiative by lecturer Jan Hinrichs, mapping of the wild bee population on the main campus was carried out in order to improve species-specific habitats for pollinating insects.

In addition, as part of the “Our Campus” campaign week, we took part in a workshop on open space design and contributed ideas for ecological design with flowering areas, sandaria and native seeds.

Another field of action was bird protection: a survey revealed documented collisions between birds and the new canteen building. As a result, cooperation with the university is being sought in order to develop measures to protect birds, for example with bird protection stickers.

The project shows how small, targeted contributions can lead to concrete ecological improvements at university locations and how much potential lies in cooperation between students and university stakeholders.
