Project description
Here it may grow
The ‘Here it may grow’ project focuses on promoting biodiversity on the campus of the University of Hildesheim. As part of the designation and maintenance of meadow areas, which are only mowed twice a year, the diversity of species here increases many times over within the first year compared to the surrounding species-poor lawns – from around 10 species on weekly mowed lawns to 35 to 65 species on the project areas.
The designation of species-rich meadow areas on the main, Bühler and Samelson campuses was the result of joint discussions between the stakeholders involved. They support the project in terms of maintenance and planning, as well as in the form of scientific monitoring to evaluate the project.
To increase the visibility of the meadow project and to raise awareness of the areas that stand out from the usual image of the campus green spaces, signs were installed briefly explaining the purpose of the project, while interested parties can access more information on the Green Office website via a QR code.
In addition, three bat boxes have been installed at the Bühler and Samelson campuses to support the emerging biodiversity through the colonisation of bats, which benefit from the increased insect population created by the growth of the many plant species.
.. So allow your lawns to grow too!
