Project description
Cigarette density
As part of a statistics course at the University of Hildesheim Foundation, the “Kippendichte” project team carried out a scientific, quantitative survey to draw attention to the problem of cigarette butts (“Kippen”) and chewing gum in Hildesheim.
The team collected cigarette butts and counted the chewing gum on the kerbs at the bus stops on bus route 4 in the city of Hildesheim over a defined area of 16 square meters. The bus stops in and out of the city were compared with each other. The survey was used to illustrate the density of chewing gum and cigarette butts from the city center to the outermost outskirts of Hildesheim. As the team not only collected data for university purposes, but also wanted to raise awareness of the issue among the people of Hildesheim and the general public, the results were published with a creative street chalk art campaign on the ground. In addition, students on campus were asked to suggest solutions to the “Kippen” problem via an interactive poster on the Green Office pinboard, thereby actively involving them.
The results were processed together with a lot of other information in a series of social media posts (videos, quizzes, facts, methodology, proposed solutions) and disseminated via several channels (@greenofficehildesheim, @bundjugend_hildesheim and @gleichgesinnt) on Instagram as part of a theme week.
