Our Mission

ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE LIBRARY is the outcome of an international academy that took place at the Hildesheim Kulturcampus in 2017 and 2018. The ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE ACADEMY brought together emerging and experienced professionals from the arts, arts management, human rights defence, and arts-related legal support, with backgrounds and origins across all continents. The ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE LIBRARY was developed based on the finding that a key strategy for resisting threats to and restrictions on artistic freedom is the exchange of, and dialogue about, existing knowledge and experience.

It is vital that knowledge in the field of freedom of artistic expression is generated, systematically collected, and made accessible in order to facilitate, support, and professionalise relevant research, self-education, and activism. Therefore, the ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE LIBRARY aims to collect, provide access to, and disseminate documents related to the promotion and protection of artistic freedom around the globe.

Seeking to securely host and facilitate access to all kinds of documents—regardless of the positions they may represent—offers a vital platform for exchange and dialogue. As we acknowledge the existence of differing opinions, we make all materials available to enable open and transparent discourse between opposing positions. We do not assume any liability for the content of the documents.

The collection offered by the ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE LIBRARY mainly refers to documents available up to the year 2022. If resources become available, work to update the ARTS RIGHTS JUSTICE LIBRARY will continue. Increasing pressure on artistic freedom worldwide makes this work all the more important.
