Question Answering: What's Next?

  Folien sw    Folien Farbe

Abstract:
With the launch, in 1999, of the question answering (QA) track
at TREC, research in QA received a big boost. Briefly, the task
is to return a single exact answer from a corpus of newspaper
articles, given a question. It has recently been argued that
the user model underlying this interpretation of the task may
not be the most realistic one. In response to this, there have
been various recent initiatives to redefine the task.

In the talk I will explain what's wrong with the user model
currently used in most QA evaluation efforts. I will also
discuss alternatives that have been proposed, as well as
research efforts, at the University of Amsterdam and elsewhere,
that take these alternative user models as their starting point.
Among others, I will discuss emerging efforts to to combine
QA and XML retrieval evaluation efforts.
