Project Comparative Regional Integration: The European Integration Process and its implication to EastAsia

Das Institut für Geschichte ist in einer multilateralen internationalen Forschergruppe im Rahmen des Jean Monnet-Programms Life Long Learning zur Vermittlung des Themas "Comparative Regional Integration: The European Integration Process and Its Implication to East Asia" eingebunden, welches von UNU/CRIS/Brügge gemeinsam mit der Renmin University of China/Beijng organisiert wird. Historiker des Instituts werden an den Kursen in Bejing und Brügge 2009/10 sowie an der Publikation eines Textbooks zum genannten Thema mitwirken.
Description of the Project, its main goals
Both European Studies and Asian Studies made great progress in the last few decades in Europe and Asia. The European integration has been regarded as the most importart model of regional integration for the rest of the world. But how to combine European studies and Asian studies together is still questionable and lack of successful stories. The Project target group is people from both European studies and Asian studies.
One of the major objectives of the project is to provide academic outcome with a comparative approach and to combine European studies and Asian studies together, to conduct bridge for the two studies. Another innovation of the multilateral research project is to introduce the multi-disciplinary approach to the Asian studies by the example of an approach of multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary cooperation of scholars from Europe and Asian in European studies.
The final Innovation of the project is to look into the suitability of the European integration process for regional integration in East Asia, which is still sharp debated among Asian scholars in both European and Asian studies.
European Integration as a historical evolution has reached to a new stage since its enlargement to 27 member states. Many scholars inside and outside Europe are asking one important question, i.e. if European Integration can be a model for the rest of the world. If so how other regions should learn from the European integration. If not is there still relevance of the European experience to the rest of the world. Because of this the comparative regional Integration studies became more and more important.
The proposed project entitled "Comparative Regional Integration: The European Integration Process and its implication to EastAsia", is to have a group of Jean Monnet Chairs and scholars from Europe and Asia working together, looking at the European integration process and find out the relevance of European experiences to the regional integration process in East Asia.
As the European integration showed the Integration process as an interaction of political, economic and social factors, European studies have the characteristics of inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary cooperation. The proposed project will be conducted by a group of scholars from political sciences, economics, sociology and history.
The main objective of the proposed project is to look at the European integration from both European and Asian perspectives and to have intellectual dialogue between European and Asian scholars so as to enhance further and deeper mutual understandings and academic communications, so as to promote European studies in Asia and Asian studies in Europe.
The main aims of the proposed project include:
1. To understanding the main features of the European Integration and its universal relevance.
2. To compare the regional integration process in Europe and Asia and to find the special features of the East Asia regionalization process.
3. To conduct academic analysis of the similarities and differences between Europe and East Asia and to find out the useful experiences and lessons that East Asia can learn from Europe. To provide scientific analysis and advices to the governmental and societal institutions for regional integration in East Asia.
The scientific objectives are:
1. To have European and Asian scholars work together and develop deeply mutual understanding for the regional integration process in Europe and East Asian.
2. To provide joint academic outcomes and training programmes for scholars and students in East Asia through joint research activities and group working.
3. To enhance European Studies in Asia, especially China through working with Asian and Chinese institutions and activities in Asia and China.
4. To promote Asian studies in Europe through team work with Asian scholars in both European Studies and Asian Studies
