What's in a Name?

This experiment is designed to find out how people talk about objects. You will see a series of common household objects and give a name for each one.

We are grateful to prof. Pavlenko and prof. Malt for kindly providing the stimuli.

Date:

Participant:

Age:

Sex:

Place where you grew up (city or town, state, and country):

Have you always lived there? If not, where else have you lived?

Native language:

If you know any other languages, please list each language and whether your proficiency is low, medium, or high:

You will now see a series of photos of common household objects.

For each one, please indicate what name you think you would call it by. Give whatever name seems best or most natural to you. The name you give can be one word, or it can be more than one word.

Please type your name into the response box next to the picture.

Some of the objects may be hard to name, but please try to give an answer for each one.

Be sure to name the object itself, not what it does or could contain. So, for instance, if you were shown a picture of a wastebasket, you would say "wastebasket" or "trash can," not "garbage."
